Position Overview
The CFO is a senior executive leader responsible for financial strategy, oversight, and integrity across the nonprofit. This role ensures financial sustainability, risk management, compliance, and data-informed stewardship of resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and lead the overall financial strategy in collaboration with executive leadership and the board
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, reserves, and financial scenario modeling
- Ensure rigorous financial controls, internal audits, and risk mitigation systems
- Direct accurate and timely financial reporting—monthly, quarterly, annual statements, dashboards, and variance analysis
- Lead grant financial oversight: fund accounting, reporting, compliance, indirect cost allocation, audit support, and cost recovery
- Coordinate external audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance (e.g., IRS, state charity filings)
- Advise on financial implications of strategic initiatives, capital projects, program expansion, and partnerships
- Support investment, endowment, and reserve management policies and strategies
- Provide financial insight to the board and committees (finance, audit), ensuring clarity, transparency, and accountability
- Collaborate with development, operations, and program teams to align budgets with mission priorities
- Build the finance team: hire, mentor, and develop capacity, and maintain best practices in financial management
Qualifications & Attributes
- CPA, CMA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credentials preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, ideally in nonprofits or mission-based organizations
- Deep expertise in nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, grants management, audit, and regulatory compliance
- Strong strategic, analytical, and financial modeling skills
- Excellent communication: able to translate complex financials into clear strategic insights
- Integrity, ethics, confidentiality, and fiduciary mindset
- Collaborative partner orientation and leadership presence
- Experience with financial software, ERP systems, dashboards, and data visualization tools
- Passion for mission, service orientation, and capacity to operate in a resource-constrained environment
